5 Key Points to Developing a Dropship Business

One of the ways to ensure your home based business maximizes income and limits expenses in a profitable manner is to develop a dropship business. Drop shipping allows you to market and sell products online without having to maintain, purchase or house inventory yourself. Instead, you partner with manufacturers and wholesalers who house your products and ship them directly to your customers.

Balancing your goals and attention between both customers and manufacturers takes some thoughtful navigation. As you develop your drop ship business, act on these key points to make your home based business a success.

1. Create a Solid Partnership with Manufacturers and Wholesalers. A strong working relationship with your suppliers is essential to the success of a drop ship business. Choose a well-rated wholesaler or a manufacturer well-known for the product line you want to sell. Establish a good rapport by visiting the warehouse or factory if you are able. Get to know the owner and managers who will handle your account.

When you talk with the owner or manager, ask about the manufacturer’s best-rated products and top selling items to find out what they are most confident in. Negotiate your payment terms, customer drop shipping contracts and expected delivery times. Stay in regular communication with your wholesalers, just to keep up the business relationship and open pathways to resolve any issues that may arise.

2. Build Customer Confidence By Knowing Your Products. After your supplier relationships, the other important connections are with your customers, of course. You gain the trust of your customers by knowing the products you sell, their functionality and similar items that may be of use to a customer. Get very familiar with all the items of a product line from each manufacturer you contract with, so you can recommend additional or more effective products to your customers with specific needs.

3. Practice Specific, Concise, Regular Communication. You are the retail link between products your customers want and the manufacturers who create them. Your successful drop ship business is about networking the two in a timely, reputable way. You develop confidence with customers when you inform them of new items or order changes. Likewise, you maintain communication with your manufacturers to know what they supply. You must stay in-the-know and alert either party about any potential changes in the process to minimize problems.

4. Establish Effective Payment Systems. You make your money on the difference between the wholesale costs you pay and the retail price of the items you sell. Be careful not to overcharge your customers, but set prices such that when they pay you for their order, you have sufficient funds to pay your suppliers, cover expenses and save a portion as profit. Use secure, direct payment systems, such as PayPal, for your customers so that you know when you have received payments. Likewise, make your payments to suppliers in a timely way, to keep the partnership in good standing.

5. Stay Organized. Keeping track of orders, payments and deliveries maintains the confidence you establish with customers and suppliers. Developing a successful dropship business includes managing details. Before you publicly launch your website, establish your accounting system with a manageable business software program like QuickBooks to track your products and sales. Use it faithfully.

Also organize your calendar. Schedule payments, wholesaler visits and marketing promotions in advance. Note any weekly or monthly appointments with regular customers as part of your effective communication.

Developing your home based business as a drop shipping business is a great expansion step that simply requires some careful planning and consistent action as the owner.

  1. Great, all encompassing drop shipping information! It was very helpful and I agree with you. There is no shortcut to knowledge and learning. You can take your online business to great heights if you are constantly gaining more knowledge and acting on what you learn. Plus being a good negotiator and a planner with great interpersonal skills will give you the boost that you require. I’ve never really thought about starting a dropshipping business before but I will look into it now.
