Is Your Business Recession Proof?

Well, it’s certainly the hot topic of the day. If you watched the debates last night, you saw two guys trying to keep people from jumping out of second story windows. It wasn’t a pretty site. No, I’m not going to get into a debate about who the better candidate is or even if we have a good candidate (many feel we don’t) but I am going to ask you a question.

Is YOUR business recession proof? In other words, no matter how bad things get, will your business survive? I know mine will. But why? How do I know?

It all comes down to creating something on a solid foundation. Okay, what exactly IS that solid foundation? And trust me, it’s more than about web sites and advertising.

What I’m talking about is demand. The greater the demand for something, the less likely that it’s going to be hurt by a recession. But what’s in demand? What are the things that people can’t live without no matter how bad things get?

Well, you’ve got food, shelter, clothing and medical care. But I seriously doubt many IMers are into those niches. Okay, what’s on the next level of the demand scale?

Problems…real problems. And make no mistake about it, there are plenty of problems in this world. And what might seem like something minor to you might be the end of the world to another person.

For example, let’s say a kid is getting ready for his senior prom and the night before, he finds a zit right on the middle of his forehead. Think he’s not going to be in a panic? He doesn’t want his date to see him like that. Think he won’t pay just about anything for a cure that will work overnight? Of course he would. I’m not saying one exists, but if if did, that would certainly be a hot seller.

Point is, there are many problems in this world and if you can come up with a real solution to one of those problems and not just snake oil, you have a very good chance of developing a business that will survive during the very worst times.

It all comes down to product creation. In my signature, you’ll find a link to a great book on this subject. My friend Justin Michie and myself have perfected the art of product creation and everything you’d ever want to know about the subject is in that book.

So, is YOUR business recession proof?

This Is Now A DoFollow Blog!

We have finally decided to join the “DoFollow” movement. I have installed Lucia’s Linky Love DoFollow Plugin. That means if you comment on posts on this blog the link to your site will be followed and you will get credit for a one-way backlink to your website/blog!

Now don’t go thinking you can just come here and post some drive-by comment just to get a link to your website, or spam your comments all over the place. I do have some measures in place to make sure that doesn’t happen.

First of all, I do manually approve all comments and I will never approve any spammy comments or other comments that I feel were posted with the sole intent of getting a backlink.

Second, I have set the DoFollow comment plugin to only follow links on comments from people who have posted a certain number of comments on this blog (no I won’t tell you how many). This will reward those of you who come here often to comment and will help discourage others from simply coming here once just to comment and get a link to their site.

Third, it will only follow links with names under a certain amount of characters. So if a comment spammer comes here and tries to use “make money online from home work at home based business” as their name, their link will NOT be followed no matter how many comments they already have.

To sum it up…

If you are someone who comes here and actually reads the posts and writes legitimate comments, you will be rewarded with followed one-way backlinks to your website. If you don’t do that your links will still be “nofollow” and you will be wasting your time!

To those of you who will not abuse this new DoFollow comment policy… Thank you and happy commenting! To the rest of you… Go away!

Some Internet Marketers Need A Course In Education

Not all internet marketers are created equal. Not everyone has the gift of personal communication skills and dealing with people on a more personal level. I do realize that. Maybe that is why some of the major players on the internet are major players. They don’t take the time to deal with individuals.

I realize I am not going to be popular for some of my statements here, but I am not your average marketer, nor am I a major player…yet! I do have a point though. The point being that since the internet is such an anonymous venue in many ways, the players who lose the personal touch are doing everyone a disservice.

I will relate a recent personal experience here and I hope you will see my point. I am involved in a program that I thoroughly believe in and I want to work from home full time in the near future. I also understand the importance of multiple streams of income and I have been researching businesses that I could possibly add to my income streams.

I use forums mostly to research business options because this is where some of the most successful marketers “hang out” and share ideas. Forums are invaluable. Recently, I found a business that I thought I wanted to learn more about and sent a private message to someone on the forum who seemed the most knowledgeable. She sent me a “canned” email about the program and that was it. I never heard back from her. I knew right then and there she was not the person I would choose to have as my sponsor and in my opinion lacked something. By the way, this woman is highly successful in a couple of businesses.

About a month later, I was on another forum and saw the thread on the same opportunity with another person who was leading that thread and quite successful as well. I sent her a private message and it was like night and day. Not only did she give me her phone number but wrote to me, sent me all the information that she could and made sure I felt free to call her to speak about the program. Who would you choose?

She has the interpersonal skills of a good educator. I am seriously considering this program and undoubtedly will sign with the woman who knows how to deal with people.

Do you see my point? The internet is so crowded, like a traffic jam at times, and people need to know there is a real person on the other side of that private message. Is it a canned email from someone who could do without you or a personal message from someone who may really want you to be on their team?

Think about it. I’ve been doing that a lot lately.

Take care,

Laura Licata

Link to Your Success

Just lately I’ve been busy with a part of my online business that is not just probably the most important part, but also the most tedious and boring.  You see, I have many websites, blogs , Squidoo lenses, Hub Pages and lord-knows-what-else pages out there in cyberspace all with their own reason for existing and all with a need that must be fulfilled if any of them want to see any decent traffic.

I am, of course talking about getting links.

Specifically, high octane, lazer targeted, keyword anchored, one-way backlinks from sources that have lots of authority. And it’s not an easy task, nor a straightforward one.

The major problem with getting links to your site has always been one of time. Having the time to seek out the best places to obtain those links from and going aout getting them any way you can. Now we probably all know the usual suspects when it comes to getting links, so I won’t bore you with those details. You’ll find them in a truckload of articles submitted to every article directory on the planet by people trying to get links from those very articles. Ok that’s one way I said I wasn’t going to mention!

The holy grail of backlinks is finding a good, Google-friendly source that has lots of keyword authority for the niche in which your site occupies, that is to be the recipient of the links. High PR sites in your niche are tough to crack as they don’t want you as competition! Sites with the same PR as yours will also be reluctant to give you links in case you overtake them and steal off with their traffic. The good part about that is that your immediate competition can’t get the backlinks that are eluding you either. So stalemate?

No. There is a way.

Here is one way right here. Writing articles in someone else’s blog that has authority in your niche. That’s fine if you want to bang your head against the MMO brickwall along with all the other marketers, but even this can be manipulated just enough to make it stretch into a related niche where there is not so much competition. The only problem with a blog post is that the link is only good for the tine your post stays on the front page. After that it sinks into the PR-less abyss with all the other archived posts. You can bolster your own post and give it’s page more authority by sending links to it from some of your own sites. That keep’s the link juice strong and authority rich.

Other ways of getting links that most people don’t write about so much is of course from your own sites. You just have to own lots of them and they have to be related in some way niche-wise and you have to make sure you don’t cross-link, as you are after one-way links with the most juice.

Then you might try creating a load of Squidoo lenses and Hub Pages to send links to your mainn sites. Did I mention at the start of this article that I have… mmm, lots of Squidoo lenses and hub pages…

That’s all well and good if you have 36 hours a day to work on them all, because they don’t create themselves and they don’t populate themselves with good unique content. Guess who has to do all that? Blogs are even worse because they constantly deman fresh content. So ok, I personally now have a rather large menagerie of sites of all descriptions and they do provide links for each other, but I struggle to keep up with them all.

So how else do you get links without paying for them, spamming them, or spending your every waking hour building ever more sites to keep your main sites sufficiently gassed up?

Taks another look at Squidoo. Not your own lenses, but other people’s.

There are now over 550,000 squidoo lenses covering just about every niche imaginable. If there is a product for sale, there are probably a dozen or more lenses promoting it. Here’s what you can do.

Pick a niche that you want to work. Select your keywords and build your own main money making site. Build free blogs and lenses etc to back that site up with links. Then go to Squidoo and do a search on your keywords. you’ll probably find many lenses on the subject. Well, go visit each of them and loot at their guestbooks if they have them. Look at the comments closely.

What are you looking for? Links!

With Squidoo guestbooks, the lensmaster has the option to either leave comments HTML set to ON (the default) or switch it OFF. Now most lensmasters are not aware of this so they leave the HTML set to ON, which means you can leave a comment containing a keyword anchored link back to either your free blogs or lenses supporting your money site, in order to boost their authority and the authority of the links they’ll give your main site, or direct to your main site if the lens is legit and has authority itself.

And the way to tell if a lensmaster has left HTML ON is by looking to see if someone else has left a link in their comment. If not, simply move on to the next lens and don’t waste time commenting in a lens that may not allow your link.

This is a fast way of getting links and some of those lenses will have PR…

Aren’t you glad some of us still write in other people’s blogs to procure backlinks?

Ramblings Of Am IM Junkie – When All Hell Breaks Loose

Well, it was bound to happen. This is why I tell people not to depend on other sites for your livelihood.

In case you were not aware of this, this blog was missing in action for a few days. This was the result of a bureaucracy that doesn’t know It’s rear end from a hole in the ground.

I find it interesting that we put our fates in the hands of idiots. And then we expect things to go well. When they don’t, we look up in the surprise, shake our heads, and wonder what the hell just happened.

What I find most amusing, is that when some bureaucracy decides that our content is not suitable for their site, in many cases they actually contradict their own rules. I am not going to mention any names, but you can pretty much guess who I am talking about.

This is why I tell people, you get your own sites. Do not rely on others for your well-being. When you do this, you leave yourself open to all kinds of disaster. Trust me when I say this-I am speaking from experience.

Today, I am getting back to a normal routine. I kind of missed this place. It’s funny how you can take things for granted, because one day you look up, and it’s gone. And then you realize how lucky you were to have it.

So I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank Trent for allowing me the honor of writing for his blog. He has been a very good friend, and one of the nicest people I have met online. I know that after this incident. He is never going to put his faith in the hands of idiots. Because let’s face it, there are plenty of idiots to go around.

So that this blog post does not become a big kiss up, I feel it is only right that I tell you about a great product. Unfortunately, I don’t have one to tell you about. At least not right now. So what you might want to do is check the link in my signature and see if you can find something there that interests you.

Well, I guess I have rambled on enough today. You may not know this, but this entire blog post was created using speech recognition software. I am currently using Dragon naturally speaking version 9. It’s not perfect, but it is pretty darn good. And I can dictate articles, much faster than I can write them. So for me, this was a good investment. You might want to check it out yourself someday… especially if you do a lot of writing.

Okay, I’m really done now.

In a few days, I’ll have another great article on some wonderful Internet marketing tips. So make sure you check back and get all great hot juicy stuff.

To your success,
